Amen Dunes

Recording songs for himself in a Catskills cabin before he did it in an expatriate’s flat in Beijing, Amen Dunes’ Damon McMahon naturally stumbled upon a hypnotically personal style of psych pop–all quivering guitars, low moans, and primal rhythms. His 2009 album, DIA (cabin-recorded before his move overseas) blurred the margins between experimental folk and pop-drone. Last year’s follow-up, Through Donkey Jaw, found an even more hypnotic... Crystal Stilts

Brooklyn’s Crystal Stilts were chief among of a new wave of lo-fi rockers that broke out of the borough in 2008 to wide notice and gigs all over the world. Wymond Miles

Though probably best known as a guitarist for the excellent, prolific San Francisco garage-rock band The Fresh and Onlys, Wymond Miles is a formidable songwriter in his own right. His solo EP Earth Has Doors was a promising tidbit, but the soon-to-be-released Under the Pale Moon, reveals a New Wave melancholy less overtly rambunctious than F & Os, but possessed by similarly inventive pop songwriting. It’s one of 2012 best debut records.
