The Felice Brothers

The Felice Brothers, Ian and James, started playing music together at family barbeques in upstate New York, as perfect a start as any maker of back-porch Americana can have. After relocating to the big city, they found themselves playing powerful folk-rock in the pastoral environs of the 42nd Street subway station, and gigging around Greenwich Village (imagine Dylan, years later, bringing The Band back to play his old haunts). Though they’ve written prolifically at every level, their first wide-available, and thus prominently acclaimed record, 2008′s The Felice Brothers, brought a full 5-piece lineup to every corner of the United States. It’s follow-up , Yonder is the Clock, had them climbing the Billboard chart and playing shows with Bright Eyes. It was followed by Celebration, Florida, a dark snapshot of contemporary U.S. decay released last year. The album stretched their sound into strangely queasy electronics, soul-sick disco. It was, as one critic, put it a “…full-on Tom Waits apocalypse record.” There’s still a bit of time left for the boys to show us their next move.
