Kool Keith

Bronx rapper Kool Keith is one of the strangest, most influential figures in hip-hop history. His 80s group, The Ultramagnetic MCs, pioneered the use of “chopped” samples: warped, context-free snippets of sound now used as building block production technique across the full spectrum of pop music. As a solo artist, Keith has performed under a series of bizarre aliases, most notably as Dr. Octagon. His classic 1996 record Dr. Octagonecologyst, is an amalgamation of surreal horror imagery, outlandish sci-fi conceits, and absurdist humor. Its mark is easily recognizable in the work of celebrated young rappers like Odd Future. But Keith was there first, proclaimed himself “Black Elvis,” kept moving.
